A Connection That Grew Into Giving Back

For Omaha mom, Sarah Freeland, giving to Children’s Nebraska isn’t just something she does; it’s something she’s lived. Over the years, she’s experienced Children’s in deeply personal ways:

  • As a Children’s Nebraska social worker, supporting children and families in crisis

  • As a parent, trusting Children’s pediatric experts to care for her own children

  • As a donor and volunteer, supporting others by donating to Children’s Nebraska

Each perspective has strengthened her belief in the hospital’s mission and deepened her commitment to giving back.

Starting with Purpose: Supporting Families as a Social Worker

Sarah’s journey with Children’s Nebraska began when she was employed as a member of its Social Work team. For nearly eight years, Sarah served as a bridge between medical teams and families managing the emotional, financial and social impacts of illness. She felt an immense sense of purpose in her work – seeing up close the positive difference Children’s made every single day in the lives of so many young patients and families.

From Dedicated Employee to Grateful Parent

When she became a mom of three, Sarah ultimately made the tough decision to step back from her career. Her perspective rapidly changed from dedicated employee to grateful parent, as she experienced Children’s through her kids’ numerous pediatrician and specialist visits, trips to the Emergency Department and minor surgeries. As a mom trusting Children’s with her most precious treasures, she was able to see the importance of the hospital through an entirely different lens. Parenting only heightened her passion for Children’s mission: “to improve the life of every child.”

“As a parent, it's very comforting knowing that Children's is right here in our community should our kids need it – for big or small things,” said Sarah. “We have utilized Children's many times over the years and are always thankful for the high level of care and expertise available without having to travel.”

Turning Gratitude Into Action

Wanting to give back to the place that had cared for both her patients and her own family, Sarah got involved with Children’s Friends Board – a group of young professionals dedicated to supporting the hospital through fundraising, advocacy and service.

Through her involvement, she helped support Children’s in several ways, including:

  • Participating in fundraising and advocacy efforts

  • Supporting key community events and initiatives

  • Taking on leadership roles that deepened her impact over time

But for Sarah, giving back isn’t just about financial support or event leadership – it’s also deeply personal.

Experiencing Children’s Impact Up Close – One Cuddle at a Time

After several years of consistent volunteering in the Children’s Nebraska Gift Shop, Sarah reached a meaningful milestone: becoming a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) “cuddler”.

What Is a NICU Cuddler?

A NICU cuddler is a volunteer who supports babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by:

  • Holding and comforting hospitalized babies during critical moments of care

  • Providing calm, warmth and human connection in a hospital setting

  • Supporting families by offering presence and reassurance during difficult times

In this role, Sarah cuddles babies when they need comfort the most – an experience that reflects the heart of why she gives.

She volunteers each week, forming quiet but meaningful connections with patients and families during their time in the hospital. Her consistent presence brings added comfort to those in the NICU.

“Some people don’t have the time to give, but they have the resources and so they make a donation,” said Sarah. “Other people might not have the resources to donate, but they have the time to give. I think it takes all those pieces to make a special place like this work.”

How to Donate to Children’s Nebraska

Sarah’s story is a powerful reminder that there’s no single path to giving back. Some give because of their professional experiences. Others, like Sarah, give as grateful parents. Many give simply because they want to ensure exceptional care is available for every child in their community.

However you’re connected to Children’s Nebraska, there is a meaningful way to make an impact – whether through a gift, volunteering your time or supporting community events that advance pediatric care. Every act of generosity helps ensure children and families receive the expert, compassionate care they need, when and where they need it most.
