About Andrew J. Macfadyen, MD
My main area of interest is in palliative care in the ICU. I was one of the co-founders of the Hand in Hand program at Children’s which today is an integral and valued part of what we do here at Children’s. I have been board-certified in pediatric hospice and palliative medicine since 2012. I was appointed by the Governor of Nebraska beginning in 2017 to serve on the state’s Palliative Care and Quality of Life Advisory Committee and I am very active in the Society of Critical Care Medicine in the area of palliative care, having just chaired a Master Class on Palliative Care Challenges in the ICU at the 50th Annual Congress.
Other areas of interest are CLABSIs and I headed the hospital’s efforts in this area for many years. I have served on the IRB almost my entire critical care career including as Chair, and I currently serve as one of the Vice Chairs of the Joint Pediatric IRB with UNMC. Since 2014, I have been the Medical Director of the PICU during a time of phenomenal growth and change. We have undertaken numerous quality improvement projects that have continued to move us forward as a unit. My vision for the PICU is simple: The best care with the biggest heart.
