Children’s committed team of health care providers use innovation is to deliver better care for kids.

  • Robot-Assisted Surgeries

Children’s surgical patients receive quality, compassionate care supported by the latest technology. In addition to using virtual reality to prepare and plan for operations, several Children’s specialties have embraced contemporary robotic surgical advancements.

In 2022, Children’s Neurosurgery team debuted an advanced tool called the Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA). It supports surgeons during complex, minimally invasive procedures for epilepsy and brain tumors, resulting in more precise treatment, greater safety and effectiveness, and faster recovery times.

  • Remote Patient Monitoring

Children’s offers remote monitoring technologies to help physicians tune in to patient needs with real-time data. Those insights help providers offer personalized, proactive care beyond a check-up, strengthen the patient-provider relationship and reduce the number of emergency department and inpatient visits for high-risk patients. Children’s asthma patients will soon be able to use a CapMedic smart inhaler, which has a sensor to track lung function and ensure timely and correctly administered medication. Children’s Cardiology & Cardiothoracic Surgery teams use the Locus Health platform to monitor heart patients with single ventricle defects, identifying changes in vital-sign data for more immediate attention. For heart arrhythmia patients, the heart team offers KardiaMobile handheld EKG monitors, by which patients take their own 30-second EKG by thumb when symptomatic. For the smallest heart patients, Greater Goods baby scales are the latest offering, taking accurate weight measurements for infants from home. Powered by Bluetooth, they record data that is automatically uploaded for providers. Children’s Digital Health & Innovation team plans to explore expanded uses for the scales in other clinical areas.

  • Adaptcare Mobile App

For children with complex medical needs, a health emergency may require additional considerations for care. But what happens when a local EMS or care team away from the home hospital lacks awareness of a child’s specific needs and history? A new app from Children’s provides a solution. Named for a former Children’s patient, the Project Austin program supports continuity of care for children with special needs, establishing individualized plans and collaborating with more than 450 EMS teams and emergency departments. Project Austin partnered with InterScripts to pilot an app that digitizes detailed care plans—a first among pediatric health care organizations. The AdaptCare app encourages preparedness and minimizes risks for vulnerable patients, such as delayed treatment, unnecessary tests and preventable errors. It will be fully functional for iPhone and Android this year.
