Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)

The vast majority of children born with even the most complex heart defects are living longer and healthier lives. With the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) program at Children’s, in partnership with Nebraska Medicine, patients are seen from birth through adulthood by providers who understand the specialized care needed in all stages of life. Our program was the first in achieve reaccreditation by the Adult Congenital Heart Association.

Minimally Invasive Care

Children’s is dedicated to staying at the forefront of medical innovations, investing in state-of-the-art equipment and expert providers. One such investment is to offer comprehensive interventional and diagnostic cardiac catheterization procedures, which are used to visualize, diagnose and treat heart conditions using a catheter. Our cardiac catheterization suites double as full-service operating rooms if and when surgery is needed. The suites house ARTIS pheno, a robotic C-arm X-ray that provides swift, 360-degree images of even the tiniest hearts with limited exposure to radiation for patients. Children’s was the first in the world to adopt ARTIS pheno in a pediatric setting.

Children’s is the only in the region to offer care with a Piccolo occluder device, a minimally invasive transcatheter treatment for closing a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in premature infants. This procedure reduces inflammation and the need for surgery providing better outcomes for patients and families.

Fontan Clinic

The Fontan Clinic at Children’s serves patients born with single ventricle heart defects and who received the Fontan procedure as a young child, affecting how the heart pumps blood to various organs in the body. Children’s offers a multidisciplinary clinic with specialists from cardiology, gastroenterology, adolescent medicine, nutrition and social work, providing comprehensive care in one convenient visit.
